How does Henco ensure this?
The multilayer pipes consist of cross-linked or reinforced polyethylene with an aluminium core. Cross-linking is done physically. It involves making connections between the PE molecules in order to obtain a reinforced structure that makes the PE resistant to high pressures and temperatures. The physical cross-linking of PE-HD (high-density polyethylene) is achieved by firing electrons onto the pipe; non-crosslinked PE-HD will then turn into cross-linked PE-Xc.
No chemicals whatsoever are used to cross-link this type of PE, as opposed to the production of PE-Xa and PE-Xb, where peroxide (PE-Xa) and silane (PE-Xb), respectively, are added to the PE to obtain a reinforced structure.
Unlike chemical cross-linking, PE-Xc does not require any post-rinsing and there is no risk whatsoever that the PE-Xc will give off an odour when the (drinking water) tap is opened. PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) is a high-performance polymer that is used when purity, strength and flexibility are needed. In addition, the plastic has a high chemical resistance: soft or hard water, PVDF can handle anything and is immune to corrosion.
